Sustainability at Lathrop

Surrounded by Nature. Determined to Protect It.

The Lathrop Community campus is made up of 140 acres with 560 acres of adjoining conserved public land—Fitzgerald Lake Conservation Area —next door. So, residents get to experience the beauty of nature every day and want to ensure it’s available to everyone for generations to come.

Welcome to Lathrop Land

One of Lathrop’s biggest initiatives is Lathrop Land, run by the Land Conversation Committee. Its focus is on removing invasive plants and installing native ones, maintaining trails, offering nature programs and bird walks, and making landscaping more supportive for pollinators and birds.

Sustainability Initiatives

Finding ways to limit our impact on the environment is a priority at Lathrop. Residents and staff work together to provide easy ways to reduce, reuse and recycle everyday items. Together, the Sustainability Committee encompasses a variety of green initiatives from EV chargers to gardening and more.

  • Community EV charger and installing EV chargers in town homes when requested
  • Community-wide recycling and composting programs
  • Evaluating plans to add solar panels to our community
  • Future campus additions will take advantage of more sustainable construction methods and eco-friendly technology
  • Fruits and vegetables from the community garden supplement our dining program
  • Culinary team uses locally sourced food whenever possible
  • Campus features 3.5 miles of hiking and walking trails
  • Involved with Kestrel Land Trust which cares for the forests, farms and riverways of the Western Massachusetts’ Connecticut River Valley
