Social Impact

Making a Difference

Lathrop residents and staff take to heart a sense of service—to each other, to the Pioneer Valley, and beyond.

Engagement and action are the hallmarks of purposeful living.  You don’t need to look far to find this at Lathrop.  Many residents and staff members volunteer for local nonprofits, such as food banks and cancer centers, and by mentoring schoolchildren, supporting local arts groups or local social activist efforts for climate change, world peace and other important issues.

In addition to extensive involvement in our broader communities, Lathrop residents are a vital part of the governance and social life at Lathrop itself. Lathrop is made vital by the energies and interests of residents in such enriching areas as art, climate response, health and fitness, music, philanthropy and more. Real impacts of this external and internal community involvement abound. For example, Lathrop’s Land Conservation Committee has removed invasive plants from 50 acres of forest on both campuses, installed native plants, maintained trails, offered nature programs and bird walks, and made landscaping more supportive for pollinators and birds. It truly is Quaker values come to life.
